“Women are the next best thing to God.” This work, Earth Girl – Lakata People carries some of that energy, and part eagle as well. You are everything you allow your spirit to guide you toward. Her braids symbolise higher power, the earth, and the soul - the spirit that drives us forward. These girls are the history that makes us who we are today. The paintings from this series are not literal portraits, but they draw from many figures across time, from Joan of Arc to Truganini to mythic beings like Nerissa the mermaid. In my work the girls have no face and no race. They’re a convergence, because I see us all as connected to one another and to the natural world. We learn from each other layer by layer, forming new connections as we go. I believe spirits are real, and that we can sense them or feel their presence the moment we step into a room. – Jackie Green
