I TOUCH MYSELF
These artworks celebrates Australian rock icon Chrissy Amphlett, a woman who challenged convention and inspired generations to embrace their individuality. Although naturally shy, Amphlett discovered an alter ego after adopting her now-iconic school uniform, inspired by AC/DC's Angus Young. What began as a costume became a suit of armour, giving her the confidence to stand tall, speak loudly and refuse to be intimidated.
Painted in vibrant layers of pink, musical notation, hearts and handwritten text, the work explores the idea that confidence is something we create. The chorus of "I Touch Myself" became one of the most provocative and misunderstood of the 1990s, yet beneath the headlines was a song about intimacy, desire, vulnerability and a longing for deep human connection.
Part of the Provocateur series, this piece celebrates women who found strength in their own voice — a reminder that courage often begins with simply being unapologetically yourself.
